A busy weekend in the rowing calendar was marked with a terrific win for the Monmouth Men's F Eight. Run each year over the 4.2 miles Championship Course on the River Thames, the two events mark the conclusion of the winter training season, with over 500 crews competing from top national crews to novice crews who have only recently learnt to row.
Monmouth had it largest entry for many years with an impressive five crews, including a Men's eight in the Head of the River Race (HoRR) and in the Vesta International Masters Head of the River (previously known as the Vets Head) a Men's F8, a Women’s E8, a mixed F8 and a combination D8 with Ardingly Rowing Club.
Highlight of the weekend was a superb win in the Master Men’s F category in a very competitive field with an overall finish position of 28th in a time of 19m19s. The crew was made up of cox Hannah LD, Tim E, Nick H, Mark SW, Simon L, Colin L, Jonathan F, Toby H and James A.
The Women’s E8 finished 147th and 4th in their category in a time of 21m41s. The crew was made up of cox Darcy B (fresh from her You tube UL race against Cambridge), Kate H, Liz L, Kathryn D, Julia C, Mary M, Gabby M, Sara P and Melanie B.
The combination D8 Mixed crew with Ardingly finished a strong 107th, 8th in their category in a time of 20m43s. The Monmouth crew was made up of cox Zach, Rachel W, Maggie H, Ellen R and Dawn B.
Perhaps the most diverse age crew ever fielded by Monmouth, the Mixed F8 had a terrific row, overtaking several crews, including a fantastic double overtake at Hammersmith (well done Annika and see the video below). They finished 143rd overall and 7th in their category with a time of 21m32s. The crew was cox Annika H, Lenny C, Tim M, Alex M, Scott H, Frances L, Gail A, Ali H and Amanda S.
The previous day, the Men's Senior C8 finished a strong 116th, in a time of 19m00s. The crew was made up of cox Richard S, Matt, Evan, Tim M, Oli, Tom C, Tom B, Sam B and Alex B.
After a long winter season, the fantastic results from all the Monmouth crews was testament to all the hard work and long hours put in across the club. Well done everyone and looking forward to continued success as we enter the regatta season.
Finally thanks to James and Mark for towing and Tim Male for his great coaching. Also thanks to Ben Rodford for some great action pictures and Putney Town Rowing Club for hosting us.
