Monmouth RC at European Masters 2025 – Day 2 on Lake Bled

Day 2 of the European Masters Regatta at the stunning Lake Bled proved to be both a memorable and challenging one for Monmouth Rowing Club – not least because it was the summer solstice making it the longest day of the year. And what a day it turned out to be!

The weather delivered a mix of overcast skies and sunny spells, but it was the strong tailwind that had the biggest impact. While it helped produce some blisteringly fast times, it also stirred up the lake, leading to choppy and testing conditions for all crews.
Despite the tough water, Monmouth rowers rose to the occasion with two superb gold medal performances. First up were Tim and Ian, who powered their way to victory in the Men’s D Pair (D2-), handling the tricky conditions with poise and control. Later in the day, the quartet of Nick, Ian, Tim and Mark joined forces for the Men’s E Coxless Four (E4-), delivering another commanding performance to secure the top spot on the podium.

Hopes were high in the Mixed E 2x with Tim and MJ who were leading until 750m, when MJs oar had a discussion with lane buoy 😢. What a way to start your birthday.
Special shout-out goes to Sue, who only raced her first 1 km event last month in Nottingham. In Bled, she stormed to second place in her heat, and thanks to a rapid time, earned a spot in the Trophy Final, where she finished an incredible fourth overall – a remarkable achievement for someone so new to sculling.

With medals around necks and spirits high, Day 2 was a fantastic blend of competitive success and personal milestones. As the sun finally set on the longest day of the year, Monmouth RC could reflect proudly on another chapter of European racing well rowed.
So all that remained to do was get back to the accommodation for some supper and a few glasses of non achohol beers.

See you on the water.
