Head of the Charles

Monmouth Rowing Club’s Masters squad have continued their success at international level – this time with an impressive performance at the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Massachusetts.

Rowed over a 3 mile course, the Head of the Charles is the largest 3-day regatta in the world, with some of the best crews in the world travelling to compete against the strongest US crews across junior, college, club, Masters and Championship events.

The Monmouth crew of Andrew Barnett, Simon Lee, Mark Woods, Nick Hooton and cox Hannah Llewellyn-Davies, competed in the Grand Masters Fours event. An excellent race saw them finishing well inside the previous course record, ahead of all the US crews, only to be beaten to second place by a very strong crew from Molesey, containing two Olympic medallists and a World Champion.

The performance was the result of a huge amount of training and preparation throughout the year, built on the foundation of Tim Male’s coaching, with massive thanks going to super-sub James Allison and cox Bonita Birkett who went beyond the call of duty for repeated early morning outings!

And thanks also to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Boat Club for their hospitality and support.
