Nestled in the scenic town of Monmouth, Wales, the River Wye came alive with the vibrant energy of the club's annual two day rowing regatta. This year's event (25th to 26th May) was especially momentous as, for the first time, the regatta programme proudly included adaptive rowing, making it a landmark occasion for inclusivity in the sport.
After such a wet winter with major head races cancelled, it was great to see so many happy rowers support the event, despite a few brief showers on Sunday.
Saturday's racing over 1500m downstream saw over 140 races with 212 crews from all over the country. Sunday's sprint racing over 750m saw some great racing, with over 180 crews taking part.
Adaptive Rowing
The addition of adaptive rowing to the regatta was met with widespread enthusiasm and support. Adaptive rowing, tailored for athletes with disabilities, provided an inspiring and heartwarming spectacle. Rowers of all abilities took to the water, demonstrating incredible determination and skill. The inclusion of adaptive rowing not only broadened the scope of the event but also highlighted the regatta's commitment to fostering a more inclusive community.
A special cause for MRC is raising awareness and funds for Dementia research. As well as selling donated kit, which raised over £400, we also had a rower with dementia race.
