Monmouth Winter Head 2025: The Big Boat Bonanza is Back!

Mark your calendars! Monmouth Rowing Club is thrilled to announce the return of our annual Winter Head of the River, taking place on Sunday, 7th December 2025. Set on the stunning River Wye, this is a fantastic, well-organised day of racing with a special focus on larger boats.

We pride ourselves on running an event that gets you racing with minimal fuss, which is why we use a system of boating in number order. This hugely reduces waiting time on the river, a welcome feature in December!

The Course

Crews will race over a 2,250m downstream course on the River Wye. You can follow the action as it happens, as times will be posted live.

Race Divisions & Events

We will be running two divisions to maximise racing opportunities:

Division 1: 10:30 hrs
- Open: Fours & Quads
- Women: Eights
- Mixed: Eights, Fours and Quads
Division 2: 13:30 hrs
- Open: Eights
- Women: Fours & Quads
- Mixed: Eights, Fours and Quads

Available Categories:

Eights: Senior, Masters B+, J18, J16, J15
Fours & Quads: Senior, Masters B+, J18, J16, J15 (4x+), J14 (4x+)
Masters crews should make entries in "B+", and they will be grouped into appropriate categories where possible.
Events for Low CRI/Beginners are offered for coxed quads, and other events may be banded based on entries.

Entries and Fees

Entry Fee: £12 per seat (coxes are free).
How to Enter: All entries and payments must be made solely via the British Rowing Online Entry system (BROE).
Closing Date: Entries close at 6 pm on Friday, 28th November 2025.

Important: We advise entering as soon as possible. Entries will be suspended early and without notice if we reach our safe capacity.

Prizes and Important Information

Presentation medals will be awarded in all events where two or more boats start the race.
If an event has only one entry, you will have three options to choose from in BROE: race "Time Only" for a 50% refund, withdraw, or be promoted to a higher category if one is available.
The event is held under the British Rowing Rules of Racing.
Coaches must ensure their crews are suitably experienced for the boat type and potential winter conditions.
