What a weekend! If you happened to wander down by the River Wye last weekend, you would have been greeted by the glorious sight of oars flashing in the sunshine, a bustling riverbank, and the unmistakable, sweet aroma of Pimm's and cake.

The Monmouth Regatta — the crown jewel in our club’s calendar—returned with absolute style. Across two packed days of side-by-side racing, the Wye turned on its absolute best behavior. We were blessed with truly perfect conditions: wall-to-wall warm weather, blue skies, and a river level so perfect and glassy it looked like it had been custom-ordered by the Events Committee.

A Tale of Two Courses

Saturday kicked things off with the 1500m downstream course. The schedule was relentless, featuring 54 separate events and a massive 143 races. By Sunday, the atmosphere shifted gear into the fast and thrilling 750m sprint course with another 54 events packed into 120 races.

Results

Saturday's Results can be accessed here and Sunday's here.

We were absolutely delighted by the turnout this year. Alongside our wonderful, regular local clubs, it was fantastic to welcome an incredible influx of long-distance travelers. A huge shoutout to Nottingham Rowing Club, who despite a flat tire on the way down, proved to be dominant forces across the entire weekend, taking home the highest number of victories on both days with a brilliant 6 wins on Saturday and another 6 wins on Sunday!

We also welcomed a massive contingent from Birmingham University Boat Club, who brought incredible skill and numbers to the water on Saturday, walking away with a fantastic 5 wins.

The Race of the Weekend: A Dead Heat Thriller!

While there was high-octane racing across every single division, the absolute standout highlight belonged to the Junior 14 Open Quad Sculls final on Sunday.

In a finish that left the judges checking their eyesight, Monmouth Comprehensive School Boat Club and Gloucester Rowing Club crossed the line in an absolute dead heat! With no space separating their bow balls, the rules dictated a full re-row.

Steeling their nerves, both junior crews took to the start line once more. After an exhausting second battle, it was the local heroes from Monmouth Comp who dug deepest, pushing their bows ahead to claim a spectacular, hard-earned victory. That win contributed to an excellent weekend for the local juniors, with Monmouth Comprehensive racking up 4 wins on Saturday and 5 wins on Sunday, while their neighbors at Haberdashers Monmouth School Rowing Club had a spectacular Sunday session, tying Nottingham at the top of the table with 6 wins!

Fueling the Fleet

A regatta is nothing without its bankside atmosphere, and ours was unmatched. The friendly, welcoming vibe was infectious, but let's be honest: a huge part of that happiness was down to the catering. Our legendary food tents kept a massive crowd thoroughly fueled. Between the towering stacks of home-baked cake, endless pots of tea, ice-cold beer, and jugs of refreshing Pimm's, the riverbank felt less like a regatta and more like the ultimate summer garden party.

Relive the Magic

Want to see how stunning the Wye looked in the sunshine? We have a short video capturing all the best bits of Saturday. An enormous thank you to Emma M for capturing and editing this wonderful showcase of our club and sport!

Our Registry of Thanks

An event of this scale takes a literal village to pull off. The committee would like to extend its deepest gratitude to:

The Ultimate VIPs: Finally, a truly special, monumental thank you goes to Bonita and Eric. An event like this doesn't just happen overnight; it is the result of months of tireless behind-the-scenes admin, draw coordination, safety planning, and logistics. You both worked absolute miracles to give us a flawless weekend. Thank you both so much!

What’s Next? 🚣‍♂️

The sun may have set on the Summer Regatta, but the racing calendar never stops. Clean down your boats, keep the fitness ticking over, and mark your diaries: our next major home event is the Monmouth Autumn Head on Sunday, 27th September 2026.

And lets hope the weather stays warm for the Head.

See you on the water.
