Monmouth Rowing Crews Fly Like a Dart
Last weekend saw 28 members of Monmouth Rowing Club head down to the River Dart for one of the most scenic events on the rowing calendar — the Head of the Dart. The crew were met with glorious sunshine and perfect rowing conditions, setting the stage for a memorable day both on and off the water.
A huge thank you to Phil for towing the trailer and handling all the logistics that made the trip possible — as always, a vital part of the MRC machine.
Superb Results for MRC Crews
Women’s E Eight – WINNERS! 🥇
Monmouth’s Women’s Masters E 8+ stormed down the course, overtaking two other women’s eights along the way and ultimately winning their category in a handicapped time of 48:43.
Their dominant row reflected the value of a summer spent training consistently together — with 15 sessions logged as a crew, that cohesion and rhythm shone through on the Dart.
As one of the crew put it:
“I thought it was up there with one of my favourite rows — we had a trail of bubbles for 13 km!”
The result capped off with some stunning medals and well-earned smiles all round.

Women’s F Eight – Fighting Spirit
The Women’s Masters F 8+ had faced more than their fair share of setbacks in training — with injuries and illness affecting the run-up — yet they still delivered a commendable performance, finishing in a handicapped time of 55:53.
Despite the challenges, the crew looked strong and together on the water, showing the kind of resilience and unity that defines MRC spirit.

Men’s Masters F Eight – Strong Over the Water
The Men’s Masters F 8+ also had a solid showing, winning over the water with a raw time of 49:20, though they were narrowly beaten on handicap (48:18).
Special mention to Jim, who stepped in as a late substitute for Phil, ensuring the crew stayed competitive and composed from start to finish.

Behind the Cox Box
Huge thanks to Gail, Matt, and Zach for their expert coxing throughout the event — guiding the crews safely and confidently through the winding 13 km stretch of the Dart.
Off the Water: Food, Fun, and Fresh Air
After racing wrapped up, the Monmouth squad took over a local restaurant, where 26 hungry rowers tucked into Dartmouth’s finest food — an evening filled with laughter, stories, and a few well-deserved drinks.
The next morning brought a slower pace as most of the team headed to the beach for a sauna and swim, rounding off the weekend in true MRC style.

What It’s All About
The Head of the Dart weekend was more than just a race — it was a reminder of everything rowing brings:
Teamwork and camaraderie
Hard training and shared success
Good food, good company, and good laughs
And, of course, a few shiny medals
Here’s to more weekends like this — and to Monmouth Rowing Club continuing to make waves wherever they go!
See you on the water
