Monmouth Rowing Club at Gloucester Regatta – Sunshine, Racing, and a Hint of Anniversary Warm-Up

With summer slipping away and the regatta season drawing towards its finale, Monmouth RC made the trip to Gloucester for one of the last outings of the year. The timing couldn’t be better – just a day ahead of Ross Regatta, where we’ll be helping to celebrate their 150th anniversary (and yes, we’ll bring cake if needed).

Gloucester served up its usual combination of friendly atmosphere, lively racing, and just enough sunshine to make waiting on the bank pleasantly distracting. Monmouth crews made sure the colours were well represented across both divisions.
Division 1
Open 1x – Tim cruised through his semi and final with an ease that made the rest of us wonder if he’d secretly installed an outboard motor.
Womens’ F2x – Bonita and Liz L had a cracking opener, edging Exeter by just a canvas in a nail-biter. The semi was a tougher ask, with Warwick taking it by two lengths – but our double showed grit all the way.
Division 2
Womens’ E/F1x – Bonita took on Rob Roy, but a four-second head start proved a little too generous to reel back this time. Still, a gutsy race.
Mixed G2x – Frances and Tim teamed up for one of the most entertaining highlights of the day. With Olympic experience in one seat and, shall we say, “plenty” of rowing wisdom in the other, they combined beautifully to see off City of Bristol by 2.5 lengths. A winning blend of youth (relatively speaking…) and experience!
Tim and Frances
All in all, Gloucester proved the perfect late summer regatta – competitive racing, good company, and plenty of laughs along the way. Next stop: Ross Regatta, where the celebrations will be even bigger, the racing just as fierce, and the Monmouth tent hopefully stocked with snacks worthy of a 150th birthday party.
See you on the water..or more likley Ross.
